Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long Beach, California on 24 August 1972. DuVernay was inspired to follow her passion of the arts by her aunt Denise as a young girl. Her aunt was an overnight nurse so that she could have the opportunity to study art literature or theater. She introduced DuVernay the 1961 film West Side Story and DuVernay fell in love with it. DuVernay learned that art can be a powerful vehicle for activism. Her mother was also a the social sensitivity and taught DuVernay how to communicate through artwork. Although DuVernay grew up in Compton with her family she was a summer resident in Lowndes County Alabama where her parents lived for many generations. DuVernay's father remembered watching the historic Civil Rights march through the Edmund Pettus Bridge, in neighboring Selma Alabama. DuVernay used the summers she spent in Alabama to inspire her future film, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay graduated with a graduation certificate in Saint Joseph High School, Lakewood California in 1990. In the year 1990, she was a graduate of the Saint Joseph High School located in Lakewood CA. As a student DuVernay began to consider producing for television journalism. She began her career as an intern at CBS News, during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being asked to examine the garbage in the house of one of jury. Due to her duties she began to feel dissatisfied by journalistic work and entered the public relations industry. DuVernay was offered a job straight out college, as a young publicist for a studio. In 1999, she established her own business of public relations dubbed The DuVernay Agency. Her agency launched numerous promotional and lifestyle networks, including Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye.
